I am a long time member of the following worldwide Fitness Organisation - REPS:

What is REPs…?

The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) is an independent public register which recognises the qualifications and expertise of health enhancing exercise instructors in the UK.

One of our key functions is to provide a system of regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet the health and fitness industry’s agreed National Occupational Standards (NOS).

Membership of REPs provides assurance and confidence to consumers, employers and health professions that all registered exercise professionals are appropriately qualified and have the knowledge, competence and skills to perform specific roles.

The REPs provides an entry framework within which individual instructors can achieve the highest standards of professionalism, linked to best practice in the exercise and fitness industry.

Why do we need it…?

The REPs exists because it is the only way to independently demonstrate that fitness professionals are competent and qualified.

What it means to you…?

Being REPs registered means that exercise and fitness professionals will have:

met the agreed National Occupational Standards which describe the knowledge, competence and skills of good practice

hold recognised and approved qualification(s)

• be recognised as a professional

• be committed to ongoing professional development and

• be legally covered to practice by appropriate insurance

About Me and FFY

Freestyle Fitness Yoga is celebrating its 10th year in 2010. This is the first course of FFY in the Portsmouth area brought to you by me Elaine Pearce.  I am a fully qualified exercise to music teacher of more than 15 years experience.  I have been teaching to just about everyone from the young to the more mature for years at various clubs and sports halls in this area. This year i have embarked on further training to teach fitness yoga to the community. I have over 9 years experience in teaching the widely respected worldwide discipline of Body Balance. This is very similar to fitness yoga in that it teaches yoga, tai chi and pilates to the masses!   I love teaching, i love all my lovely participants , i love what i do!! Can i inspire you too!!

Freestyle Fitness Yoga Instructors are taught how to understand Yoga postures from an anatomical and physiological perspective. This means that they can provide a unique perspective to traditional Yoga. They understand their students potential for strength gains and their limitations for flexibility resulting in constant progression.

FFY instructors will not entertain you or blow you away with their showmanship, they are taught to quietly and mindfully mentor their students by cuing and correcting specifically for each individual. They want class participants to understand their bodies potential and be the best that they can possibly be.

FFY is a fitness program that incorporates stretch, strength & Yoga postures

Every element of FFY is validated from a fitness perspective. Any one taking part in a FFY class can expect to improve their flexibility greatly in 8 weeks. They will learn how to identify the bodies stabilizing muscles and use them effectively and efficiently to improve their posture and move with more confidence

How does FFY differ from traditional Yoga?

It is not a spiritual experience it mimics Yoga in its breathing, focus and style offering postures that endorse strength and stability. There is no dogma, chanting or philosophy attached to this workout. There are no Sanskrit terms as postures are prescribed from the bodies natural anatomical perspective. We avoid general prescription of extreme postures that exceed optimal ranges of motion in favour of individual strengths and performance. During FFY moves and postures can be sequenced together to the beat of the music making transitions seamless and graceful.

Who is FFY appropriate for?

FFY is appropriate for many different target groups. Health clubs, leisure centres & the community can benefit from Fitness Yoga on the timetable as its roots in fitness make it excellent prescription for a total body programme where flexibility is often the weakest link. Like all group exercsie it can be taught in many different levels to suit all age ranges and abilities

Why teach FFY instead of traditional Yoga?

FFY has been developed over 10 years. It is a contemporary approach to an ancient format. It takes on board modern fitness trends and research to fine tune postures that in some instances can be contra indicated. It helps bring Yoga in line with other classes by using the same language and exercise prescription. Instructors can be assured that they are not saying things that contradict their daily practice.
